Want to bring National Youth Theatre to your school? Sign up for a school audition day!

Whatever your students want to do in future, NYT auditions build confidence, teamwork skills, and offer access to a national creative network.

School auditions are a great way for your talented young students to become members of NYT, which offers them up to a variety of opportunities such as, access to casting auditions for NYT and external productions, backstage roles for productions, workshops, member led activities, members only events, and much more!

What are auditions for?

Auditions are to become a member of the National Youth Theatre. Successful auditionees will join us for an Acting Intake Course in 2024 and train in performance, devising and ensemble theatre-making. Check out one of our recent summer intake courses.

After completing an intake course, you become a National Youth Theatre Member until you turn 26. Our members have access to a range of opportunities including getting involved in national productions, working with industry professionals, taking part in creative leadership training, developing your own work in our Made by Members Programmes, performing in NYT events, accessing castings with external organisations, and more. FAQs for Teachers

Dates

School auditions take place at your school between December-March each year.

Fees

School auditions cost £24 per student (it is up to the school to decide if they will pay the fee for the students or if the students will pay the £24), which covers their audition and one year's access to our online Hub. At NYT we don’t want cost to be a barrier, so we do offer Hub bursaries for students on Free School Meals.

There is also a one-off fee charge for the 3-hour workshop to cover the cost of the workshop leader(s). For 10-20 students, the workshop fee is £180; for 21-40 students, the fee is £360.

If you would like to arrange a school audition day but feel you would struggle to get the funding, please email schools@nyt.org.uk and we will try to accommodate you as best as we can.

Audition day structure

Your School Audition Day will be hosted by one or two NYT Associate Artists. The day is made up of two parts: a group workshop and an individual audition.

The group workshop will take place in the morning and last for three hours. In this workshop, you will explore an introduction to the National Youth Theatre and our approach to ensemble theatre-making. The workshop is designed to be fun, interactive and start the day ahead of your audition in the afternoon.

The individual auditions will take place in the afternoon and last for ten minutes. You will perform a monologue for a NYT Associate Artist, who may also chat to you about your interests or redirect your monologue if time allows.

How many students can audition?

The maximum number of students in an audition day is 40. This is so that the facilitators can ensure every students has enough time to perform their 2-minute monologue and a quick chat afterwards. However, we can come to your school more than once.

If more than 40 students from your school would like to take part, please contact schools@nyt.org.uk to arrange logistics.
